Open Now: The Global ETF Survey Take the Survey →
You wouldn’t expect a tech guy from the dot-com bubble era to become one of the loudest champions of exchange-traded funds (ETFs), but that’s exactly what happened.
Nate Geraci, now President of the ETF Store and host of ETF Prime, shared how water cooler chats about personal investments with a CFO led him down the ETF rabbit hole.
Back in 2007, these discussions about ETFs turned into a real business idea. By 2008—right in the heart of the global financial crisis—Nate launched a registered investment advisory firm centered entirely around ETFs.
Cue the bloodied noses and hard lessons. Launching a wealth management firm in the middle of financial chaos wasn’t easy, especially for two people without traditional finance backgrounds. But that outsider perspective ended up being an advantage. It allowed Nate to approach the industry with fresh eyes and eventually shape it in his own way.
One turning point came in a Kansas City coffee shop, circa 2010. A business contact told Nate bluntly: “No one knows what an ETF is.” To prove him wrong—or right—Nate got up and asked everyone in the coffee shop if they’d heard of ETFs. The result? Not a single yes.
This realization lit the fire for what became a lifelong mission: ETF education. Nate didn’t just double down on his advisory business. He launched a local radio show dedicated to explaining ETFs in plain English. That show eventually became ETF Prime, the first podcast of its kind. By packaging up episodes into MP3s and distributing them through iTunes and Spotify, Nate found a national audience that craved ETF knowledge.
The need for education didn’t stop with the average investor. Advisors, too, were hungry for a deeper understanding—especially as ETF products exploded in both volume and complexity. That’s why Nate co-founded the ETF Institute. Think of it as a living, breathing playbook for advisors who want to stay relevant.
The curriculum isn’t static. It’s constantly updated with modules covering everything from active ETFs to digital assets. With over 300 new ETFs launched in just the first few months of the year—including double-leveraged crypto and catastrophe bond ETFs—this resource is vital. Advisors can’t afford to spend hours decoding new products. The ETF Institute condenses it all into digestible, actionable content.
Of course, no conversation about ETFs in 2025 would be complete without talking crypto. Nate laid it out simply: more than 90% of advisors have been asked about crypto by their clients. Whether or not they believe in Bitcoin or Ether, they need to understand it—and quickly.
The launch of spot Bitcoin and Ether ETFs has opened the floodgates. There are now 70+ crypto-related ETF filings with the SEC, and a regulatory green light could bring even more to market. The ETF Institute is seeing massive interest from advisors looking to understand the mechanics, custody issues, and tax implications of crypto ETFs.
When it comes to allocation, Nate made a compelling distinction. Bitcoin, with its digital gold narrative, fits well in an alternatives sleeve. Ether and other crypto assets? They're increasingly viewed as tech plays and could slot into the equity sleeve.
Spot Bitcoin ETFs were the “gateway” products. Now with more index-based and actively managed crypto ETFs coming down the pipeline, advisors will have all the tools they need to build diversified crypto allocations. But again, the keyword is education—understanding cash creation mechanisms, custody risks, and the role of regulation is essential.
The COVID era woke up a generation of DIY investors who flocked to ETFs. Platforms made access easy, but understanding 4,100+ ETF options? Not so much. Nate sees this group as a vital part of the ETF community, and he’s right.
Many of these investors are motivated and curious—but they often hit a wall when trying to educate themselves. That’s where the ETF Institute steps in again. Even though it’s branded as a professional designation, individual investors use it too, because it aggregates ETF education in one place.
And it’s not just formal education—they’re also learning from Nate himself. With over 60,000 followers on X (formerly Twitter), Nate has built one of the most influential ETF-focused communities online. His posts, charts, and sharp commentary have become a go-to resource for both retail investors and advisors looking to stay current. In an industry where jargon often clouds the message, Nate’s clarity and wit stand out—and his social reach plays a huge role in expanding ETF literacy.
