Brian's latest venture, Shaping Wealth, is a global coaching and content platform serving the wealth management industry. This platform is dedicated to training financial advisors to become guides on the journey toward funded contentment. But what exactly drives Brian to pursue this mission after a long and successful career in the investment world?
"I reached a point in my career where I didn't feel like I was adding value to client portfolios," Brian explains. "I met a lot of financial advisors who genuinely cared about their clients, and I saw a virtuous mission in financial advice that the general public doesn't fully appreciate. I wanted to help."
Brian's passion for teaching, writing, and content creation led him to explore the idea of funded contentment, a term he elaborates on in his book, The Geometry of Wealth. Unlike his first book, The Investor's Paradox, which focuses on making better investment decisions, The Geometry of Wealth is a broader meditation on living a meaningful life and where money fits into it.
"Funded contentment or true wealth is the ability to underwrite a meaningful life," Brian says. "It's not a number or a goal you cross; it's a mindset you adopt. It's a more Eastern approach to wealth than the traditional Western perspective."
Shaping Wealth's mission is to provide funded contentment for everyone, as long as basic needs like food and shelter are met. The company's vision involves training financial advisors to coach their clients towards this mindset. This approach requires emotional intelligence, trust, and a deep connection with clients.
"Many financial advisors are focused on building better portfolios, but in today's world, well-being is a legitimate issue for the financial advice community," Brian notes. "To help people live better lives and manage their money effectively, advisors need to create a framework of trust and connection."
Brian's work with Shaping Wealth goes beyond traditional financial advice. By helping advisors develop the skills needed to build trust and connect with clients, he aims to redefine the value proposition in the wealth management industry. This shift is particularly important in the context of generational change and evolving perspectives on well-being.
"As always, insightful, interesting, and beautifully put," I conclude our conversation with Brian, grateful for the depth of knowledge and inspiration he continues to provide.
In summary, Brian Portnoy's journey to funded contentment and his work with Shaping Wealth offer a refreshing perspective on wealth management. By focusing on emotional intelligence, trust, and meaningful connections, he is helping reshape the industry to better serve clients' holistic well-being.
