EPEM: A Deep Dive into Emerging Markets

The Harbor Emerging Markets Equity ETF

aims to uncover value across developing economies. It invests primarily in emerging market companies, focusing on equity securities such as common stocks. With a research-driven, bottom-up investment process, the fund seeks out fundamentally sound businesses trading below their intrinsic value.

The strategy is built on detailed fundamental analysis, designed to balance return potential with risk awareness. EPEM is unconstrained by market cap, allowing the portfolio to span small, mid, and large-cap companies.

It typically holds 40 to 70 positions and may also use ADRs and GDRs for international exposure, adjusting allocations as market dynamics shift.

EPIN: Navigating Developed Markets Abroad

Meanwhile, the Harbor International Equity ETF

zeroes in on companies in developed markets outside the U.S. Similar to EPEM, it seeks undervalued stocks with strong fundamentals and growth potential, deploying a bottom-up selection process infused with ESG considerations tailored to the company’s sector, region, and core operations.

With a focus on risk-adjusted returns, EPIN uses both qualitative judgment and statistical modeling to construct a portfolio that reflects conviction while controlling for downside.

Like its emerging markets sibling, EPIN holds 40 to 70 stocks and may include ADRs, GDRs, and securities denominated in foreign currencies.

The strategy also allows for up to 1.5x exposure relative to its benchmark in emerging markets, adding flexibility when opportunities arise.

Backed by EARNEST Partners’ Proven Philosophy

Both new funds are managed by EARNEST Partners, an Atlanta-based institutional investment firm with a long-standing reputation for consistent, disciplined investing.

“When you find a manager that ‘clicks,’ you want to deploy that manager across multiple specialties. EARNEST Partners has distinct and natural capabilities where they can use their keystone traits: resilient business models, strong capital discipline, and long-term decision making and apply them to investing abroad where we believe there is greater opportunity, especially during times of market volatility.”
Kristof Gleich, President and Chief Investment Officer, Harbor Capital Advisors

The team at EARNEST begins each investment journey with a proprietary screen of the investable universe, filtering out hype-driven stocks in favor of those grounded in durable financial performance. It’s a repeatable and disciplined process that emphasizes long-term value creation over short-term noise.

“The global landscape is shifting. As economic and political structures reorder across regions, new opportunities are emerging—many of them outside the United States. Rather than retreat from this change, we believe it’s a distinct time to engage. At EARNEST Partners, we are identifying companies abroad that demonstrate discipline, adaptability, and a long-term orientation. In times like these, having intentional exposure to international markets isn’t just diversification—it’s access to a world of potential.”
Paul Viera, Founder and Chief Executive Officer
