AURA ETFs has launched the AURA AI Photonics ETF

, a fund offering targeted exposure to companies building the optical and photonic technologies underpinning next-generation AI infrastructure. The fund launched on 8/10/2026.

PHOX tracks the VettaFi AI Photonics Index, which is built around a specific thesis: as AI workloads scale, data centers need greater bandwidth, faster transmission, and better power efficiency than traditional copper connections can offer, accelerating the shift toward optical interconnects, silicon photonics, and co-packaged optics.

A Six-Layer View of the Photonics Value Chain

Rather than casting a wide net across AI or semiconductor themes, the underlying index defines the opportunity across six distinct layers of the photonics supply chain: the raw chemistry and materials used to engineer light-emitting compounds; the raw light and micro-optics hardware that generates and steers light; the translator chips that bridge electrical and optical signals; the module integration and assembly stage that combines these components into finished transceivers; the physical network of switches and fiber-optic cabling that connects data centers; and the testing and quality-control tools used to validate these components before deployment.

At least 80% of the index is made up of principally engaged companies which qualify only if they derive at least 50% of annual revenue derived from the AI photonics architecture. (or be a pre-revenue company entirely focused on it), and meet minimum thresholds for market capitalization, free float, and trading liquidity. The index selects the 25 highest-ranked eligible securities, ranked first by how principally engaged a company is in photonics, then by market capitalization, and rebalances quarterly.

The index draws from a global universe of exchanges across 27 countries, including notable exposure to China, Taiwan and other Asian markets, a deliberate design choice given the region's role in optical-module and component manufacturing.

Why Investors Should Consider PHOX

According to AURA, PHOX is designed to give investors focused exposure to the optical technologies that are increasingly underpinning AI infrastructure, rather than to AI applications or the computational chips themselves. As data centers demand more bandwidth and efficiency, the fund aims to capture the shift toward optical interconnects and co-packaged optics.

The firm positions PHOX as a way to access a fragmented global supply chain through a single, rules-based vehicle, distinguishing it from broader technology or general photonics funds that may include unrelated end markets. The index also incorporates forward-looking revenue estimates, aiming to weight more heavily toward businesses expected to derive meaningful future growth from AI-related photonics.

AURA frames the fund's global reach, including exposure to Chinese and Taiwanese manufacturers, as a further point of differentiation from other funds addressing the AI photonics theme.

Rob Oliver, Founder and CEO of AURA ETFs, commented on the fund's approach:

“PHOX represents a truly innovative approach to AI photonics exposure in that it takes a global view, including Chinese and Taiwanese manufacturers that have been regularly excluded from ETFs offering exposure to the AI Photonics theme.”
